Shawbury ran out 3-1 winners against Wem Town in the charity Powell Cup final at the Butlers Sports Ground Wem.
Shawbury started brightly and raced into an early lead when a Tom Rogers goalbound strike was deflected into the net by Wem & Ludlow Town
defender Paul Tomlin who was unable to get out of the way.
Shawbury and Wem both spurned good chances in front of goal with Shawbury goalkeeper Colin Smith pulling off a good save from Joel Bentley from
close range to deny an equaliser.
Shaun Humphries then added the second Shawbury goal direct from a freekick after Steve Giles was fouled just outside the 18yard box which he put
the ball over the wall and into the net. Tom Rogers then got the third just before halftime after he broke clear of the Wem defence and shot across the advancing keeper and into the net.
Wem came out much better in the second half and got a consolation goal when Shawbury failed to clear their lines and Wem frontman Joel Bentley
scored from close range to reduce the defecit but Shawbury held on for the win and the first trophy of the season infront of quite a sizeable crowd. |

Shawbury finish 3rd

Shawbury finished their highly successful league campaign in third place after winning the last game of the season at
home to Heath Hayes 2-1.
Shawbury started brightly and could of opened the scoring in the first minute when Steve Giles turned his marker and
his shot just went wide of the post. Tom Rogers also went close when he tried to put the ball over the keeper who was off his line but did just enough to keep it out with his fingertips. Shaun Humphries & Darren Leonard both went close but were unable to find the net.
Then totally against the run of play a Heath Hayes freekick found the back of the Shawbury net as their centre half
found himself in acres of space & headed home from close range.
Tom Rogers then levelled the scores shortly after he latched onto a through ball and raced clear of the Heath Hayes
defence before lobbing the advancing keeper from the edge of the 18yard area.
Shawbury then took the lead when Dave Timms crossed the ball into the box which eluded everyone including the
keeper and when straight into the back of the net to make it 2-1 half time. |

Heath Hayes tried to get an equaliser in the second half and went close on a couple of occassions but the Shawbury defence stood firm and
held out for the three points which guaranteed the third place in the league this season. |
